How to Write an Award Announcement Press Release (Examples & Template)

Awards are like a vote of confidence and give your brand a credibility boost. It’s a big deal and it should be treated as such. A great way to make an award announcement is with a press release.

Whether you’re new to press release distribution or are looking to refine your skills, you landed in the right place.

This blog covers everything you need to know about an award press release which includes an award press release example, and a free press release template.

But first…

Why is press release distribution important?

There are around 4.66 billion active internet users worldwide. These people are surfing the internet for answers and entertainment and brands like yours are creating content to fulfill those needs.

The combination of users and content can make it difficult to stand out. That’s why you need to find ways to gain a competitive advantage.

A tried-and-true way to do just that is press release distribution.

Think of press release services as a megaphone for your brand and messaging.

If you’ve recently won an award and want to share the news, consider a press release.

What is an Award Announcement Press Release?

An award announcement press release is a type of campaign a company distributes to announce a recent accolade, award, or honor.

These awards could be academic, business, or community-related.

No matter the award, the purpose of this press release is to share your good news with your target audience, the media, and stakeholders.

This type of press release aims to build a buzz and attract positive publicity.

An award press release includes:

  • Details about the award.
  • The criteria for selection.
  • Quotes from senior-level executives.
  • Background information about the awarding company or organization.

How to Write a Headline for An Award Announcement Press Release

An attention-grabbing award announcement press release starts with a compelling headline. Consider the following tips to improve your headlines:

  • Be Clear – Your headline should be succinct and include your brand and the award name.
  • Share the significance – If you can, touch on the significance of the award using words such as “achievement,” “excellence,” “success,” or “recognition.”
  • Use Active Voice – Write your award announcement headline in active voice to make it more dynamic and engaging.

What should you include in an award press release?

When writing an award press release, make sure you address the key message points by using the inverted pyramid (5 W’s + How):

  • Who?
  • What?
  • When?
  • Where?
  • Why?
  • How?

Here’s how to apply this to an award press release:

  • Who? Include your company name
  • What? What’s the name of the award you won? What is it for?
  • When? When was the announcement made?
  • Where? If you won the award at an event, for example, where did the event take place?
  • Why? Why is this award important for your business and your customers?
  • How? Include information when applicable.

Here’s how to put these answers into a press release format:

The first and second paragraphs include the facts and some supporting details of your award announcement.

The third paragraph is usually a quote from a leader and/or topic matter expert in your organization.

TIP: Don’t treat your quotes like an afterthought. Take the time to work on your quotes as they are commonly shared in articles and social media posts.

The rest of your campaign should include details that support your announcement, which is winning an award. Talk about the award and the organization that sponsors it. What does this achievement mean for your brand?

After you finish these sections, seal your campaign with a boilerplate

If you need to write one from scratch or update what you have, check out our boilerplate blog for some helpful tips and a free template.
